Comic: Why academics REALLY use Twitter

This comic parodies a popular Nature paper on the impact of social media on academics and research. Twitter helps ’em avoid paying attention during boring meetings. And gossip. Sound familiar?

By extension: Why does the healthcare private sector use Twitter? Throw in a heavy dose of self-marketing, and it’s likely comparable. There’s a lot of crossover here with academics.

The PhD comic shown on the right parodies an infograph found in the Nature article, “Online collaboration: Scientists and the social network.”

The popular feature actually honed in on the growing emphasis of ResearchGate among the academic community – and whether or not it has any lasting impact on research. Are such social media tools helping improve academic collaboration? Or is it just hype?

But when it comes to Twitter: Something to do during boring meetings? Interact with the intellectually crush-worthy set? Avoid writing? Harks true here…

Found this on Twitter. h/t @westr.
