One week after upheaval, Joslin Diabetes Center names new CEO

Joslin Diabetes Center has named a replacement one week after John Brooks III said he was forced to resign as CEO after five years in the role, according to media reports.

It’s been one week since John Brooks III resigned as CEO of Joslin Diabetes Center after five years in the role and the center has named a replacement, according to media reports.

It appointed Dr. Peter Amenta who will take on the position, effective Oct. 5. He served as dean of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School for eight years, and has sat on the Joslin board of trustees for five years, according to his biography on Joslin’s website.

The Boston Globe noted that the center had been losing money. Its profits sagged from $4.3 million in 2012 to $3 million in 2013.

The Globe referenced a statement provided by Joslin. In it, Amenta said his focus at Joslin will be to make the center more efficient, build relationships and partnerships with nearby hospitals and raise money to support its mission.

Underscoring the lack of clarity for the institution’s future, it noted that Amenta said he was uncertain whether the efficiencies would involve any staff reductions among its 525 employees.

Several established and emerging digital health companies have partnered with Joslin, depending on its considerable resource of diabetes experts.

Since Brooks resigned, Eliot Lurier, the CFO and Treasurer, has taken over as interim CEO.
