Wearables might be going to a whole new level: Tech tattoos

Would it be easier to continue use of a wearable if it was actually stuck to your body under your clothes instead of on the wrist?

Wearables have proven to be something many people wear for a bit, but then they might get slightly irritating or basically just a nice thought in theory, rendering it useless. But what if a wearable was essentially painted on your body, appearing almost like a tattoo? Austin-based software design and development firm, Chaotic Moon, has created just that.

The have put together different components and conductive paint to create a circuitry system, Tech Tatts, which monitor health and biometric data from the skin. Chaotic Moon CEO Ben Lamm told TechCrunch this technology could be potentially used to send data to medical professionals.

“This is the new wearable,” Lamm told TechCrunch. “The future of wearables is biowearables. This is not something that can be easily removed like a Fitbit. It can be underneath a flack jacket, directly on the skin to be collecting this data and being reported back.”

Though it’s not easily removable like a wristband, the wearable “tattoo” can just be washed off much like a temporary tattoo.

The company sees the health benefits for the tech tattoos as well as military potentials, like possibly detecting poisons in the air, pathogens in a soldier’s body, or identifying when they are hurt or stressed. In addition to that, it could be used as a tracking device that could, for example, help parents stay aware of where their kids are in an amusement park or other highly populated areas.

“It’s an eco-friendly, non-invasive use of a platform that basically turns you into a human circuit board,” Lamm said.
