Ann Arbor, Michigan-based medical device company, Hygieia has teamed up with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in order to launch a 12-month study with its d-Nav service created to help about 1,000 diabetic patients more effectively manage their Type 2 diabetes.

Hygieia as been working on this insulin delivery and monitoring system since 2008. It’s the size of a smartphone and uses cloud-based software to analyze blood sugar levels with the help of input from doctors to help patients keep track of and optimize their own insulin levels. The goal is to pay closer attention to each individual’s body chemistry and be able to monitor levels in a more personalized way.

The study is set to begin in the second quarter of 2016, analyzing patients who are working with doctors at the Oakland-Southfield physician organization in southeast Michigan. Use of the d-Nav service could end up saving costs for patients, so that is one of the primary focuses – if it is helpful enough in combination of costs.

According to a company statement:

A similar one-year demonstration project conducted by The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHSCT), part of the UK’s National Health Service, showed that patients using the d-Nav service experienced a significant drop in average blood glucose (known as HbA1c) and a substantial reduction in diabetes care costs within 12 months. In 2015, SEHSCT became the first health system in the world to adopt the d-Nav service as a new standard of care for patients with type 2 diabetes using insulin.

Hygieia said the use of the d-Nav service could save up to $100 million in pharmacy and other health care costs for diabetic patients in Michigan.
