The first “cyborg Olympics” will happen this year – featuring exoskeleton and powered wheelchair competitions

Cybathon 2016 will be a competition that takes place this October in Zurich – it’s being referred to as the cyborg Olympics. Among some of the events, competitors will be using things like advanced exoskeletons and powered wheelchairs.

The prominence of robotic devices used by those challenged with physical impairments is becoming more apparent. Now, some people who aren’t what we traditionally consider to be athletes will have the opportunity to use their devices and “compete” in a very unique opportunity to both empower them and showcase how far along technology has progressed. The tasks that will be completed are more like what someone would do in normal day life.

In the promotional video for the event, Patrick Pfreundshuh, a mechanical engineer, said this about exoskeleton technology: “This will give people the ability to adapt to unexpected obstacles, which will also make them more flexible to walk, and it’s also possible to adapt to this stiffness, and that’s also what the human body does during the natural human gait cycle.”

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich stated the the goal of Cybathon is “to break down barriers between general public, people with physical impairments and technology developers.”
