Reforming like it’s 1999: A healthcare homage to Prince

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go 2 fast
But risk-based pricing does appear that it’s here to last
ACO’s all around us, hospitals must underwrite
Some are gonna fold, others merge to keep the ship upright

Prince 1999_coverMy Prince homage — sorry couldn’t help myself. Prince was the lead vocalist on the soundtrack of my college years. I worshipped the guy, loved the music, appreciated the creativity and how he always appeared to revel in his own unique quirkiness. He had his own color, for crying out loud. You gotta be pretty badass to corner the market on a color.

The rumor is that Prince died of a very modern-day healthcare problem – an opiate overdose. Of course, this isn’t yet confirmed, but how sad to think that this great talent died from a drug abuse challenge that the healthcare system itself has wrought. I hope it isn’t true, but either way, to honor his Purpleness, here’s my update of his classic, 1999.

If you need the tune in your head, U can get it here and read along 2 the beat:

Don’t worry, I won’t hurt U
But we know the status quo is done

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin’
Twas clear our health system had changed

Payers in a circle
There were people runnin’ everywhere
Tryin’ 2 run from the destruction
Regulations have brought to bear

‘Cuz they say two thousand sixteen old rules over
Profit caps this time
So tonight insurers pricing like it’s 1999

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go 2 fast
But risk-based pricing does appear that it’s here to last
ACO’s all around us, hospitals must underwrite
Some are gonna fold, others merge to keep the ship upright

‘Cuz they say two thousand sixteen volume pricing over
Value, now’s your time
So tonight health systems billing like it’s 1999

Yeah Yeah

Lemme tell ya somethin’
Consumers come to the party
No idea what they’re looking for
They have some money in their pockets,
A clinic at the corner store
Yeah, Nobody out there is calm,

When they don’t know what to pay
But in order to stay healthy
They need transparency

Oh, they say two thousand sixteen days of free care over,
No more, not this time
Damn that old Father time (Tonight I’m gonna)
So tonight patients spending like it’s 1999
We gotta owie!

Say it 1 more time
Two thousand sixteen days of free care over
Feeling fine?

No, no (Tonight I’m gonna)
So tonight they gonna spend it like it’s 1999
We gotta owie!

Pretend it’s 1999
You say it, 1999
1999
1999 don’t stop, don’t stop, spending out of line
Two thousand sixteen and the party’s over
Squeezing every dime
Yeah, yeah

So tonight we gonna spend it like it’s 1999
We gotta owie!

Yeah, 1999
Don’tcha wanna know (I’m not feeling fine)
Don’tcha wanna go (cure not found online)
We could all die any day (even with a data mine)
I don’t wanna die
But I just can’t afford to pay (damn those plan designs)
Listen 2 what I’m tryin’ 2 say

Everybody, everybody say Costly!
C’mon now, U say Costly!
That’s right, everybody say Costly!

Can’t run from the capitation, no (Ugly)
Hope for innovation y’all (Hardly)
Doctor network shrinking, baby say (Badly)
Cell phone’s a-ringin’, doctor (Loudly)
Pick up, Pick up, U say (Busy!)
Everybody, [2 denials] (Doubly!)
Spend it down 2 the ground, say (Sadly)
Come on, fix my body, baby (Hardy!)
That’s right, lordy, wait is long (Help me!)
That’s right (Come On!)
Got a copay in my pocket mama, say (Part B)
Oh, and I’m girding for more (Cranky!)

Healthcare, boy does everybody need a balm!
Healthcare, boy does everybody need a balm!
