MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Medtronic Inc. has launched a new spinal-fusion device used to treat patients suffering from degenerative spinal conditions.

The medical-device giant’s Sovereign Spinal System is designed to promote fusion of bones in a patient’s lumbar region, or lower back, according to a statement from Medtronic.

Made out of an organic polymer, the lens-shaped device contains three holes for titanium screws, which are used to stabilize the adjacent vertebrae. The device incorporates technology developed by renowned orthopedic spinal-surgeon-turned-inventor, Dr. Gary Michelson.

In 2005, Medtronic agreed to a $1.35 billion settlement with Michelson. The settlement allowed Medtronic to gain ownership of patents issued to Michelson and settle litigation between the two parties, the New York Times reported.
