University Hospitals Case Medical Center’s first spinoff company Fluence Therapeutics Inc. recently opened in the downtown Akron Global Business Accelerator on South Main Street, the Akron Beacon Journal reported. The start-up comes from more than 20 years of research on a psoriasis treatment known as photodynamic therapy developed by doctors and scientists at UH and Case Western Reserve University.

The Cleveland Clinic ranked No. 4 for for being trusted and No. 4 for brand equity among charitable non-profit organizations in a recent poll by market research firm Harris Interactive, according to a Harris release. It was the Clinic’s first appearance in the poll led by St. Jude’s Research Hospital and Susan G. Komen for the Cure for trust and brand equity in recent years, possibly because healthcare nonprofits rose to the top of public awareness during the national reform debate.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, and White House Office of Health Reform Direct Nancy-Ann DeParle held a press conference call Friday to discuss health insurance reform, according to a release from Brown’s office. Brown offers several multimedia files of the event at his Web site.

Add public health agencies to the list of organizations struggling to operate with less funding and higher expenses, a situation that could force some to make cuts in staff and services, according to the Dayton Daily News. The Greene County Combined Health District’s budget is expected to fall from $9.1 million in 2009 to $8.1 million this year as one-time money for H1N1 programs and other grants expire.

Dr. Michael Pryce, a Kent orthopedic surgeon, author and medical expert, is running as an Independent for the U.S. Senate seat from Ohio being vacated by Sen. George Voinovich, according to the Hudson Hub Times.

The CareSource Foundation will dole out more than $135,000 in its first round of health grant awards for 2010, according to the Dayton Business Journal.
