The Cleveland Clinic has launched a mobile version of its website that will allow smartphone users to search for doctors and access general information about the hospital.

The mobile site, m.ClevelandClinic.org, is the latest initiative in a series of Health 2.0 projects the Clinic has rolled out in recent years.

The Clinic’s new mobile site will allow users to search for doctors by name, location or department; obtain general information, such as hours, parking options and directions to the Clinic’s 80 locations; access a system-wide phone directory; and look up terms in a medical dictionary, according to a statement from the Clinic.

Scott Linabarger, the Clinic’s director of internet and interactive marketing, characterized the mobile site as a “test-and-learn environment.”

“We’re not sure what demand is going to be so our approach is to take it slow and create a simple site,” he said.

Users who access ClevelandClinic.org from their mobile phones will be directed to the mobile site. The mobile site is designed to work with web-enabled phones, including Blackberry, iPhone and Droid.

In July, the Clinic launched a health and wellness portal, ClevelandClinicHealth.com–essentially its own version of WebMD. That site redirects readers to a section of ClevelandClinic.org, and culls information from many of the Clinic’s print and other online publications. It includes an alphabetic index of health problems, a video database and intersperses personal stories about diseases.

The Clinic has also in recent years launched a jobs site, struck some new partnerships with online publications, become more aggressive in promoting the hospital through Internet searches, and expanded its efforts in social media.

“Social media is going to be huge for us,” said Linabarger, ticking off the Clinic’s efforts on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The Clinic has not created any iPhone apps, unlike Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic, but it’s “definitely a possibility” in the future, Linabarger said.

Ditto for the iPad. “It’s too young for us to have developed any strategy or tactics around it,” Linabarger said of recently released device.

The Clinic says its website is the most-visited hospital site in the U.S., according to information services company Experian Hitwise.
