Miromatrix CEO Robert Cohen has joined the executive advisory board for the Methuselah Foundation (MFoundation), a nonprofit medical charity that focuses on extending life and eliminating aging diseases.
Cohen said he joined MFoundation to specifically work on the group’s NewOrgan Prize, a new scientific competition to stimulate work in regenerative medicine. The foundation will award cash, based on public donations, to anyone who successfully grows and transplants an organ, including a liver, kidney and heart, from a patient’s own cells. The organ must also work properly for at least two years.

“This is right up our alley,” said Cohen, referring to Miromatrix, a University of Minnesota-bred start-up founded by biomedical researcher Doris Taylor. The scientist earned global acclaim by successfully growing a beating rat’s heart in a jar.
Founded in 2003, the foundation also sponsors the MPrize, given to scientists who break the world’s record for oldest living mouse and extend the life of mice through novel rejuvenation therapies.
