The Ohio Secretary of State’s office has launched Election Night Reporting — a Web site that will give (unofficial) real-time vote tallies for issues and races in today’s primary election.

You can use the site to track votes for Issue 1 — the constitutional amendment to extend the Ohio Third Frontier program for four years with a bond issue of $700 million.

Failing voter approval, the 10-year, $1.35 billion program to energize Ohio’s economy by investing in technologies in five industries, including biomedical, will expire in 2012.

Third Frontier has had a $6.6 billion economic impact on Ohio, supporting research and enabling industries to create nearly 50,000 jobs and more than 600 companies since 2002, reports have shown.

Here are some of the things supporters have said recently about the program:

— “I am here today because Ohioans are making a decision during early voting, and they will finalize that decision on Tuesday. And they will determine whether or not the most critical economic development tool available to our state is continued.” Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland

— “Our company has been enabled by this very powerful Ohio Third Frontier program. I can even say, without it, QED wouldn’t be here today.” Hiroyuki Fujita, president, CEO, Quality Electrodynamics

— “Ohio’s aggressive and sound-investment strategies in the biosciences are delivering results in the form of jobs, new and recruited companies, and rapidly increasing growth capital.” John F. Lewis Jr., vice president, BioOhio

“We should enthusiastically renew the Third Frontier, which is the most effective, free-market driven initiative across the state in rebuilding our economy around technology-driven industries like biomedical devices … with the potential to drive growth and create jobs for years to come.” Mark Collar, venture partner, Triathlon Medical Ventures; founding chairman, Third Frontier Advisory Board

“I believe the Third Frontier project should be renewed, as I believe the program is achieving its objective of bringing enhanced vitality to sectors of the Ohio economy critical to the future of the state, the program is generating substantial employment and the program is essentially self-funding, since the tax revenue from income and sales taxes are quickly paying back the investments made thus far.” Richard Fearon, chief financial officer, vice chairman, Eaton Corp.; Third Frontier commissioner

— “Renewing the Third Frontier for Ohio is absolutely critical for the state’s employment future. Having funding to grow established high-tech companies, fund new startups and expand the Third Frontier internship program is extremely important if we are to continue to compete with the rest of the world.” Bob Schmidt, chairman, Cleveland Medical Devices

The secretary of state’s office will begin posting absentee ballot results shortly after polls close at 7:30 p.m., said Jeff Ortega, assistant director of communications.
