The State Medical Board of Ohio has indefinitely suspended the licenses of two doctors — one for improper prescription of pain medicine and the other for having sex with three patients.

Each doctor will have 30 days to wrap up care of patients before the suspensions take effect, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Dr. Sheila Barnes, a 52-year-old family doctor from Grove City, was cited by the board for improper care of 13 patients from 2000 to 2007. Aside from improperly prescribing pain medications, Grove provided inadequate care to a number of patients. Barnes’ problems stemmed largely from improper documentation, the board said, and she’d be required to complete a training class on the subject before the board would consider reinstating her license.

The second doctor, 67-year-old orthopedic surgeon John Mark Hatheway of Columbus, had sexual relationships with three patients between 1983 and 2004. Hatheway said alcohol contributed to his judgment lapses, but that he’s been sober for five years. He must agree to an evaluation by the Center for Marital & Sexual Health before the board would consider reinstating his license, according to the report.

The board (pdf) indefinitely suspended the licenses of 51 Ohio doctors in 2008, the last year for which statistics are available on its Web site.
