Nurses reach tentative agreement with Duluth hospital group

The union representing 1,000 nurses employed by SMDC Health System has reached a tentative contract with the hospital group in Duluth. In a blog post, the Minnesota Nurses Association says it will abandon plans to conduct a one-day strike on Sept. 14, once nurses ratify the three-year contract.

Last week, the union filed a 10-day strike notice after talks broke down between the association and hospital group, which owns St. Mary’s Medical Center and Duluth’s Children’s Hospital.

The two sides clashed over wording on patient staffing: the union wanted to shut down a unit if there weren’t enough nurses on duty. SDMC preferred more flexible language.

The MNA blog post offered few details on the agreement other than, “We have been able to get the language Twin Cities nurses have had that allows us as RNs to advocate for our patients!”

About 400 union nurses also voted Wednesday on a new contract with St. Luke’s Hospital. The MNA will announce the results tonight.
