Akron General Medical Center has named a new president. Alan Papa, the president and chief operating officer of Mt. Carmel-West Hospital and a former executive within the Akron General system, will begin Jan. 31.
This is the latest in a series of leadership changes at the health system since new CEO Vincent McCorkle took over in April. For example, in late October an ex-PNC bank executive took over the development arm of the system, Akron General Development Foundation. Akron General still needs a chief financial officer and chief medical officer.
Hospital leaders praised the health system’s direction in late 2009, though Akron General executives may have one of the more daunting hospitals jobs in Northeast Ohio. Cleveland healthcare giants — including Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland’s University Hospitals — increasingly are moving south toward Akron. And insiders feel that it’s unlikely Akron-based Summa Health System and Akron General would both remain intact after the fallout (with Akron General to face the biggest setbacks).
