Akron General Health System plans to create a neuroscience institute that will be phased in over several years.

Initially, much of the patient care at the institute will focus on disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves, according to a statement from Akron General. As the institute expands, it will add other areas, such as nonsurgical neurologic disease.

Neurological disorders, such as stroke and brain aneurysms, are expected to become more prevalent — and, in turn, more lucrative to hospitals — as the U.S. baby boomer population ages.

In 2011, plans for the new institute include the renovation of four operating suites that will accommodate new surgical equipment. Future plans call for the development of a dedicated neurological intensive care unit and an interventional pain management program, according to the statement.

Dr. Georges Markarian, who currently practices at the Center for Neuro and Spine in Akron, will be chairman of Akron General’s newly formed neurosciences department. He’ll bring two neuroscientists with him and look to recruit several more during the next few months.
