Pediatric medical devices developer adds to its consortium

The Institute for Pediatric Innovation Inc. added another hospital to the consortium of medical centers it’s assembled to develop medical products for infants and children. The Cambridge, Mass.-based institute tapped Children’s Medical Center Dallas for its collaborative of seven health centers working to develop medical devices and pharmaceuticals specifically designed for pediatric indications.

The Institute for Pediatric Innovation Inc. added another hospital to the consortium of medical centers it’s assembled to develop medical products for infants and children.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based institute tapped Children’s Medical Center Dallas for its collaborative of seven health centers working to develop medical devices and pharmaceuticals specifically designed for pediatric indications.

IPI‘s model for product development attempts to meet unmet needs in pediatric settings, such as a specially designed adhesive for neonatal intensive care units. Its partnership includes Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, The Children’s Hospital of Denver, Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center.

Donald Lombardi, founder and CEO of the five-year-old nonprofit, is a former intellectual property chief at Children’s Hospital Boston. Lombardi told MassDevice in a Jan. 2010 interview that the institute goes through a rigorous process to find products that are both clinically needed and commercially viable.
