Eight University of Massachusetts medical technology research projects won $25,000 grants from the institution’s Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property Technology Development Fund.

The University of Massachusetts made eight grants totaling $200,000 to fund medical device research by faculty members.

The awards, which are given annually, are funded by the university’s Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) Technology Development Fund.

Awardees included faculty from the UMass Amherst, Worcester and Lowell campus.

The projects that received funding include a biodegradable bandage system and disposable mini pressure sensors to aid cardiac surgery.

UMass system president Jack Wilson established the technology development grant fund in 2004 as way to generate revenues for the school through the licensing of technology created through the grants. Returns from the licensing deals exceeded $40 million in fiscal year 2010, according to university.

“This program has aided UMass scientists in their quest to translate today’s breakthrough into tomorrow’s new product and medical treatments,” Wilson said in prepared remarks.
