Patient saved by synthetic trachea made from his own stem cells. The first synthetic trachea made from a patient’s own stem cells without using donor tissue was implanted in a patient in June, researchers announced Thursday. Scientists in Sweden grew the windpipe for a man with late-stage tracheal cancer. Creating the implantable medical device took only 10 to 12 days, compared to the months it would have taken to find an organ donor, they said.

More medical breakthroughs in transplantation… Bone marrow transplants with half-matched bone marrow or umbilical cord blood are comparable to fully matched tissue, according to two new clinical trials. The scientists conducting the studies say this means that nearly all leukemia and lymphoma patients needing a transplant would be able to find donors. Plans are in place for a bigger and more extensive trial to begin later this year.

U.S. officials fear terrorists might get more creative. Surgeons told the Wall Street Journal that surgically implanting explosive devices into terrorists’ bodies wouldn’t be that hard. U.S. officials have expressed concern that this technique could be used by suicide bombers.

Sanofi stops Multaq trials. Drug maker Sanofi says that a trial for the heart drug Multaq has been halted due to other heart-related side effects in patients. Multaq was being used to treat patients with an irregular heartbeat. In January, the FDA issued an alert that Multaq had caused serious liver problems in patients using the drug.
