As you begin preparations for the new year, you might want to start thinking about where to go to check out new design trends and investment considerations for healthcare and life science startups. Here are some upcoming conferences that focus on innovation, or have innovation as a significant theme.

Digital Health Summit in Las Vegas at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (Jan. 11 to 12). The two-day summit, which will look at gaming and social networking, managing data, and technology’s impact on physician-patient relationships among other topics, includes a discussion about the unlikely pairing of cars and health monitoring devices with a talk from Gary Strumolo, the global manager of health and wellness research, interiors and infotainment for Ford Research and Innovation, Ford Motor Co. Health Innovation Summit in San Francisco, California (Jan. 18 to 20) is focused on entrepreneurs who develop innovative products for the healthcare sector. The conference will have a different theme on each day. A developer focus will have discussions with chief technology officers, mobile health entrepreneurs and cover topics such as data standardization and security. A designer day will feature “design tactics from the startup trenches” and discussions with the founders of companies like Massive Health and Crohnology.  The CEO day will include a forum with HealthTap and Avado.

9th Annual Healthcare Conference at Harvard Business School Future of Healthcare: Innovative Business Models (Feb. 4). The conference will explore topics such as public-private partnerships in public health, entrepreneurship in healthcare services, redefining the role of venture capital in healthcare, One of the keynote speakers is Dr. Bill Crounse, a senior director for worldwide health for Microsoft who also authors an interesting blog.

The 3rd annual Burrill Digital Health Meeting in Burlingame, California (Feb. 7 to 8) will highlight underlying issues around digital health technology and emerging business opportunities. Among the keynote speakers is Barry Mason, IBM Healthcare & Life Sciences vice president for global healthcare payers. There’s an app showcase and panel discussions that will highlight social media and consumer issues.

Wharton Health Care Business Conference in Philadelphia (Feb. 16 to 17). The theme of this year’s conference is “innovation in a changing healthcare environment.” The panel discussions cover innovations in medical technology, wellness and healthcare delivery, biotech and pharma and healthcare funding. Among the keynote speakers is Glen Steele Jr. of the Geisinger Health System Foundation.
