Two great places to be today

Cleveland.  Yes, I know, the winter weather is not to everyone’s liking with lots of snow and not enough sunshine.  But, for our company, Cervilenz Inc., Cleveland is a great place to be.  Northeast Ohio is a dynamic center for biotech and medical device ventures.  Two Cleveland nonprofit organizations — JumpStart and BioEnterprise — have helped create a very nurturing climate for startups like ours.  We can get support from all angles, from professional guidance on nearly any topic to introductions to potential funders.  A new business incubator for innovators opened a few months ago too:   Shaker LaunchHouse.  Of course, there’s also MedCity News, which started here and gives this industry valuable visibility.  Cervilenz Inc. is thrilled to be headquartered in the beautiful village of Chagrin Falls, just east of Cleveland.

San Francisco.  Most people smile and nod with an “I love that city!” proclamation.  Members of the Cervilenz Inc. team are proud to be there this week.  Dean Koch, President and CEO, is presenting today at OneMedForum SF 2012, and the city is buzzing with investors, bankers, and executives attending the annual JP Morgan Global Healthcare Conference.  OneMedForum is a prestigious conference for emerging healthcare companies.  It’s a great platform for companies like ours to connect with strategic partners.  In settings like this, people often remark on how many interesting ventures are coming out of Cleveland.  Cleveland is on the map as a center for innovation in life sciences.

Our innovation is the CerviLenz device — a single use disposable that measures cervical length to help identify pregnant women at high risk for premature birth and enable preventive treatment.  13 million babies are born prematurely every year, and those early births are the leading cause of infant death.  Convincing evidence was recently published showing that vaginal progesterone cuts the risk of premature birth in half for patients with a short cervix mid-pregnancy.   The CerviLenz device is poised for commercialization to meet the rapidly growing need for cervical length measurements for all pregnant women.
