If you’re looking to do clinical trials for Lyme disease-related treatments, new research funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that New Jersey and Wisconsin are hot spots for the disease.

Durland Fish, a professor of Epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, said the researchers had found of a search of 300 sites around the country, Lyme disease was a significant problem in the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions, according to an article published in the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene cited by The Star-Ledger.

The triple threat of lots of deer, ticks and people contribute to New Jersey being a hot spot for the disease. As the deer population increases in Pennsylvania and Virginia, incidents of the disease could increase in those areas, Fish noted.

There are about 20,000 cases of Lyme disease reported annually.

Although Lyme disease is treatable, it can lead to complications if undetected. GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK) developed a vaccine which it later pulled from the market in 2002 because of low demand. Baxter (NYSE:BAX) has been conducting clinical trials.
