What celebrities are to Facebook, “thought leaders” now are to LinkedIn.

The professional networking site has a few noteworthy new users, in the form of thought leaders like President Barack Obama, Arianna Huffington, Pete Cashmore and Cleveland Clinic CEO Delos “Toby” Cosgrove.

LinkedIn announced today in a blog post by Ryan Roslansky, the head of content products, that it is allowing users to “follow” 150 thought leaders on the site, in the same kind of way you can subscribe to a celebrity on Facebook or follow one of Twitter to see their latest updates. These thought leaders will be sharing “unique knowledge and professional insights,” Roslansky said in the post, including status updates, videos, photos and Slideshare presentations.

Eileen Sheil, executive director of corporate communications at Cleveland Clinic, told MedCity News that Cosgrove was invited by LinkedIn to become one of its first thought leaders. She said that the communications department will help maintain and oversee the account, but the themes and topics of posts will be decided by Cosgrove himself. Followers can expect content from him about twice a week, she said, along with relevant videos and presentations.

The first post on the account, which went up today, details Cosgrove’s transition from being a cardiac surgeon for 35 years to becoming chief executive of the Clinic. It’s already gotten close to a dozen likes and several comments.

LinkedIn says it will continue to expand the list of influencers you can follow. There are already a few other healthcare personalities, including social media guru Phil Baumann,  Castlight Health CEO Giovanni Colella, and “Lean Hospitals” author Mark Graban.
