As part of the health IT industry, it seemed fascinating that despite the operating scales of practices, physicians all across the US are adopting health IT applications like EMR and practice management software. While some physicians can’t thank the government enough for its stimulus package, others fail to appreciate the benefits that EMR vendors are providing them with state of the art, integrated solutions.

Last time I visited an old friend, a doctor, I could see a completely changed practice environment. Elimination of paperwork and empty racks were clear delineations that he had implemented Electronic Medical Records (EMR) for his practice. Furthermore, reduced staff and negligible hassles across the practice were evident signs of a practice management software in use. As we discussed the scope of health IT applications in the industry, he was all praise for EMR and Practice Management software.

“Imagine the ease of documenting patient encounters and demographics within seconds, and then retrieving them with just a few clicks. While the EMR streamlines all the clinical workflows, practice management helps in scheduling, resource allocation, and billing etc. What else do you need from a health IT application”, says a Michigan based Health IT consultant.

He was right, the practice management software helps keep the front and the back office connected at all times. The seamless workflow transition from administrative to billing tasks, and that too without unnecessary delays and errors, could not be possible without such applications. Gone are the days when physicians or their staff had to manually schedule appointments and maintain the details. Practice management allows them to do it all within seconds. The digitization of records has enabled them to send electronic alerts to patients about their appointments and follow up details. According to statistical reports, a significant amount of no show-ups have been reduced with the help of practice management software. Moreover, the feature of KPI dashboards provides a complete insight of a practice’s financial health. So now, you have the financial consultant of your practice within the practice management software.

“With practice management, getting complete control over the business side of the practice is no longer a difficult job”, says a New York based physician.

Billing procedures and related problems have always be an issue for physicians. Practice management software has helped physicians with reduced claim denials and increased revenue collection. Today, the cloud based practice management software has also eliminated the need of making hefty investments and extensive IT knowledge. On top of that, it is the integration of health IT applications that has made such applications easily accessible – using a single interface. Some health IT consultants believe that integration between EMR and practice management software is one of the best things that EMR vendors have done.
