A video by an OBGYN group at a Toronto hospital depicting their mad child delivery skills “Gangnam Style” has been dumped from the provider’s YouTube channel. The decision by Sunnybrook Hospital came amidst complaints from Humanize Birth, a group that identifies itself as an advocate for women’s rights in childbirth, that the video “dehumanizes women, babies, and birth in general,” according to its website. The group is demanding a public apology from Sunnybrook and University of Toronto, which is affiliated with the hospital.

The “Gyne Stye” video shows people dressed as obstetricians and nurses  dancing around “patients,” catching airborne plastic babies and lyrics like, “The baby ain’t the only one whose ballin’.” According to Mashable, which first published the story, the hospital made the video private before ultimately eliminating it from its YouTube channel. It was later reposted by an individual who claimed not to be affiliated with the hospital or critics of the video. It’s not one I’d expect image conscious hospitals to let anywhere near their site.

With the original Gangnam Style video topping 1 billion views in the past week, parodies have been popular this year, most recently in First Round Capital‘s holiday video.

As hospitals and other healthcare providers use social media channels like YouTube more frequently, it will spark a lot more discussion about what kind of image is acceptable for a hospital and what isn’t. And it’s all the more unusual for a hospital to be in this situation because they tend to err on the side of caution in these matters.

Personally, I thought it was hilarious and wasn’t offended in the least. But from a professional standpoint, I think it goes a bit too far. What do you think?
