A woman whose leg was severed when a taxi jumped the curb in Midtown Manhattan was aided by a group of bystanders. Among them were a fast-acting plumber and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz who hosts his own talk show on network TV, according to media reports.
One of the first people on the scene, was David Justino, a plumber, who used his belt as a tourniquet with help from Dr. Oz. The New York Daily News reported that a nearby vendor brought a bucket of ice in which they kept the woman’s foot until an ambulance arrived.
Witnesses said that the taxi may have swerved onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting a bicyclist, according to The New York Daily News. The accident took place by Rockefeller Center. The woman, an English tourist who was spending her first day in the city, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but neither her name nor condition were released.
