The challenges and opportunities of an international approach to benefit-risk

A session at the DIA 2014 50th Annual Meeting will discuss the need for a common framework and approach to the review of medicines and address the challenges and opportunities for developing a systematic structured approach to benefit-risk assessment.

This post is sponsored by DIA.

In 2007, four regulatory authorities from Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and Singapore formed a consortium and identified that there was a need for them to agree on an aligned approach for benefit-risk assessment. The opportunities and challenges of developing such a strategy will be addressed at the DIA 2014 50th Annual Meeting.

This year’s Annual Meeting, in San Diego from June 15 to 19, will feature a session titled “An International Approach to Benefit-Risk Assessment of Medicines: An Evaluation by a Consortium of Established Agencies” under the Global Regulatory track.

The session, to be held on June 18 from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM, will focus on the Heads of Agencies Consortium, which consists of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia, Health Canada, and the Health Science Authority (HSA) of Singapore.

The session at the DIA 2014 50th Annual Meeting  will discuss the consortium’s need for a common framework and approach to the review of medicines and address the challenges and opportunities for developing a systematic structured approach to benefit-risk assessment. It will also reveal the outcome of the consortium’s studies. Dr. John Skerritt, National Manager, Therapeutic Goods Administration, Barbara Sabourin, Director-General of Health Canada, and Dr. Raymond Chua, Group Director of Health Sciences Authority of Singapore, will give their views. Professor Stuart Walker, Founder of the Centre for Innovation in Regulatory Science (CIRS) in the United Kingdom, will chair the session.

The DIA 2014 50th Annual Meeting: Celebrate the Past – Invent the Future is the largest multidisciplinary event that brings together a community of life sciences professionals at all levels and across all disciplines involved in the discovery, development, and life cycle management of medical products all with a common goal to foster innovation that will lead to the development of safe and effective medical products and therapies to patients.
