Simbionix, a Cleveland-based maker of 3D virtual reality surgical simulation and training, has been acquired for $120 million in cash by 3D Systems.
The privately held Simbionix has built more than 60 interventional procedures across eight surgical specialties with 16 simulation platforms – which makes it, according to 3D Systems, a “complementary building block” that expands on the larger company’s breadth and reach within the “open-ended 3D healthcare field.”
Simbionix, though headquartered in Cleveland, has conducted its R&D work out of Israel, where it has pioneered patient-specific simulations that have been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. Because the 3D, virtual reality tools are so customizable for patient procedures, they could help revolutionize the way physicians practice and master surgical procedures, 3D Systems said.
3D Systems plans to harness Simbionix’s global sales channels and clinical relationships – a useful bonus because the small company’s products can be found in simulation centers, hospitals, colleges and other educational facilities in more than 60 countries.
Simbionix CEO Gary Zamler will stay on board after the acquisition, changing his title to Vice President and General Manager, Simbionix Products for 3D Systems.
