President Obama announced on Tuesday that 11.4 million people had either renewed their health coverage under the Affordable Care Act or selected private health insurance plans during the enrollment period, which ended on Sunday.
That number will continue to go up during the next week, administration officials said, because some people who had technical problems with HealthCare.gov are being still being signed up.
“It gives you some sense of how hungry people were out there for affordable, accessible health insurance,” Obama said in a video released by the White House.

“The Affordable Care Act is working,” Obama said. “It’s working a little bit better than we anticipated — certainly, I think, working a lot better than many of the critics talked about early on.”
Although the enrollment tally seems promising, federal health officials acknowledge this number is preliminary. People are formally enrolled when they pay the first month’s premium, but if they don’t pay their share of premiums in later months, they will lose coverage.
