UnitedHealthcare launches caregiver support channel

One of the most interesting aspects of the channel is the marketplace, an online store that lists products and services available in the caregivers’ geographic area.

caregiversIn a nod to the 44 million people who serve as caregivers to family members and loved ones, UnitedHealthcare launched a channel on its website to connect caregivers to the information and resources they need. Solutions for Caregivers has been under development for three years and made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

I got a chance to view the channel in a demo.

To ascertain the condition of the person being cared for, users complete a questionnaire on the website. Based on their responses they are presented with relevant content based on specific illnesses and challenges for care recipients. Articles and video highlight conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart attack and stroke.

A support section called My Community is designed to make family members aware of resources for caregivers to connect each other — such as siblings who need to share documents pertaining to a parent, such as a living will. They can also use the section to do secure messaging, coordinate and track tasks and see upcoming appointments. There are also case management services that can help caregivers create and follow through with a loved one’s care plan.

One of the most interesting aspects of the channel is the marketplace, an online store that lists products and services available in the caregivers’ geographic area. Although it currently includes services to make individuals feel more connected to their family and friends, such as Presto, it plans to add digital health services in areas such as medication adherence and remote patient monitoring. Kirk Pion, vice president of innovation design and development, said. “We view [the marketplace] as a gateway for these services.

Companies are added to the marketplace if their technology passes muster in pilots.

The move by UnitedHealthcare came as a report by the AARP this week offered a snapshot of the state of caregivers. It highlights their priorities, needs and opportunities for entrepreneurs and insurers to make a difference.
