athenahealth makes first acquisition from More Disruption Please accelerator

The deal is also something of a milestone because Arsenal Health was athenahealth's first investment for the More Disruption Please program, in 2014.

athenahealth has acquired a healthcare startup in practice management, which took part in its More Disruption Please accelerator and Marketplace, according to a company statement. It’s the first acquisition the cloud-based electronic health record provider has made from its accelerator program, a spokeswoman confirmed.

The deal is also something of a milestone because Arsenal Health was athenahealth’s first investment for the More Disruption Please program, in 2014, the statement said.

Arsenal Health developed Smart Scheduling, which uses predictive analytics to anticipate which patients will cancel medical and dental appointments or won’t show up at all. The idea is to make these practices more efficient and reduce wait times. athenahealth will use the acquisition to bolster its machine learning and predictive analytics capabilities.

The company, led by Chris Moses, was formed after its co-founders met at an MIT hack-a-thon. It participated in Healthbox before it took part in More Disruption Please.

The startup not only participated in MDP, but its app has been on athenahealth’s marketplace. As part of the acquisition, the app will be taken off the marketplace and placed on athenaNet for athenahealth customers.

There’s been some debate as to the terms for companies selected for More Disruption Please, particularly regarding the first-notice language and how it could affect strategic acquisitions.
