Researchers have created a “bionic patch” designed to monitor and treat heart conditions in real time

Researchers at the University of Tel Aviv have created what they are calling a bionic patch that is designed to monitor and help treat heart conditions in real time.

As Reuters reported, the patch is made up of functional tissue along with electronics that can help physicians have a better idea of what’s going on in a patient’s heart. The patch is comprised of live, lab-grown heart tissue and nano-electronics embedded on a 3D printed scaffold.

In addition to providing more information for doctors, the device can be used to release medications as well as to repopulate the defected area with cells that are capable of contraction, potentially providing an alternative to heart replacement for some patients.

The findings of this research were published earlier this month in the journal Nature Materials. It will still be a while until the bionic patch is available for commercial use, but clinic trials are soon to come.
