These are the digital health startups competing in the MedCity INVEST Twin Cities Pitch Perfect contest

Startups running the gamut from physical therapy to diabetes care to anonymous peer-coaching will compete in the MedCity INVEST Twin Cities Pitch Perfect startup contest on Oct. 11 in Minneapolis.

Digital health investment has been on a solid trajectory in the past few years, with 2017’s record haul of $5.6 billion looking to grow even larger this year, according to Rock Health. This increase in capital has created an increasingly competitive landscape for entrepreneurs to get their products and platforms funded and in front of customers.

Startups running the gamut from physical therapy to diabetes care to anonymous peer-coaching will compete in the MedCity INVEST Twin Cities Pitch Perfect startup contest on Oct. 11 in Minneapolis. The digital health companies taking part in the competition will be given four minutes for a pitch in front of our panel of judges, investors and healthcare business executives.

The judges for the event will be Jodi Hubler, managing director of Lemhi Ventures, Cheryl Matter, the senior director of innovation for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and Jessica Zeaske, the director of healthcare investments at GE Ventures.

Here’s a closer look at the companies vying for the top prize in the pitch contest:

THRIVORS is a St. Paul, Minn.-based company focused on providing the oncology pharmaceutical industry with at-home data on patients suffering from the side effects of cancer drugs, allowing for improved clinical outcomes and better medical and lifestyle adherence.

Sunrise Health has developed an anonymous text-based peer support group chat for those suffering with issues like substance abuse and behavioral health. The Baltimore, Maryland-based company uses natural language processing to alert moderators of patients in crisis.

Group K Diagnostics is based in Philadelphia, Penn. and produces a paper microfluidic device and an associated mobile application that is trying to reduce the time and cost associated with diagnostic testing.

MotiSpark, based out of Los Angeles, Calif., is using a personalized video platform to try and promote positive behavior change and help patients stick to physician care plans and recommendations.

UnaliWear has created a wearable watch geared toward seniors that it touts as the “OnStar for People.” The Austin, Texas company’s technology provides fall detection and emergency assistance for users.

Minneapolis, Minn-based TheraTec is centered on the physical and occupational therapy market, using a combination of software and wearable monitors to aid in adherence to rehab plans and adjust practices and protocols remotely.

MetaLogics is a Minneapolis, Minn-based digital health company which has a developed a platform for health improvement and weight management that includes a wearable calorie monitor, data analytics and a mobile app.

Moving Analytics, based out of San Francisco, has created a cardiovascular disease management platform that they claim has higher participation, lower costs and equivalent outcomes to current brick-and-mortar alternatives.

Somatix is a New York-based startup that creates wearables for remote patient monitoring to help with use cases like smoking cessation and elderly wellbeing and health management.

POPs Diabetes Care is based in Oak Park Heights, Minn. and is trying to improve management diabetes through easy glucose monitoring, app-based behavioral coaching and connecting the patient with providers and family members.
