Healthcare hires of note

Better Therapeutics, a prescription digital therapeutics business developing nutritional cognitive behavioral therapy to treat cardiometabolic diseases, has hired Frank Karbe as President and CEO, starting July 5th. Current CEO and company co-founder, Kevin Appelbaum, will continue to serve in that role until then.

Prior to Better, Karbe has served as president and CFO of Myovant Sciences, where he oversaw its evolution from a private startup to a publicly listed commercial-stage company with two approved and marketed products. He also served as CFO at biopharma business Exelixis.

Bigfoot Biomedical, a company dedicated to supporting better health outcomes for people with insulin-requiring diabetes, has appointed Matt Rainville as chief commercial officer.

Rainville previously served as Insulet Corporation’s vice president and general manager of global Type 2 markets, where he led the company’s Omnipod Type 2 franchise and helped to expand access to insulin pumps for people with diabetes. Prior to Insulet, Rainville spent 13 years with Eli Lilly, where he held leadership roles in sales, training and development, marketing, operations, and market access — contributing to the successful launch of nine diabetes products globally.

Catamaran Bio, a biotech company developing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-NK cell therapies to treat cancer, has appointed Dr. Cherry Thomas Chief Medical Officer.

Her experience in oncology clinical development also includes roles at Array BioPharma/Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squibb, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, and Amgen. Prior to Catamaran, she worked at Caribou Biosciences where she served as senior vice president of clinical development. In this role, she initiated and built Caribou’s clinical development program and advanced the company’s first allogeneic CAR-T cell therapy into the clinic.

Denver Health hired Lorena Marquez Zimmer as Chief Impact Officer, effective May 16. In the newly created position, she will help launch the Center for Equity, Diversity and Opportunity, a focal point for the organization’s Anchor Institution work that will house three main components:

Denver Health’s Workforce Development Center: A place where staff can advance their professional and financial well-being through a range of resources and support services, including help with career pathways, financial coaching, and skills training and development.

Office of Health Equity: The Office of Health Equity builds upon existing work to address disparities in health outcomes. The Office will be the focal point for organizing, prioritizing, funding, and expanding Denver Health’s health equity efforts.

Equitable Contracting and Procurement Initiative: Through this initiative, Denver Health will increase the percentage of its annual spend devoted to local, diverse businesses.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts  has added Jake Biscoglio as senior vice president of commercial products and customer solutions. Biscoglio will oversee the strategic development and ongoing execution of the company’s medical product and health engagement offerings.

Biscoglio joins the company from Prudential Financial, where he served as vice president, business development, partnerships, and affinity business.

Endevica Bio, a company developing first-in-class peptide drug candidates, has appointed Dr. Daniel Marks as Chief Medical Officer. Marks is a prominent researcher in cachexia, Endevica’s first targeted indication for its lead product candidate TCMCB07. He will help guide the company through pre-clinical and clinical development.

He previously led Daniel Marks Pediatric Research Lab at Oregon Health & Science University and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

Oak Hill Bio, a clinical-stage neonatology and rare disease therapeutics company developing drugs for preterm infants and patients with rare autoimmune diseases, has named Tauhid Ali as its first CEO.  Ali has more than 25 years of experience in the biopharma industry, with broad management and leadership experience in translational research, drug development, and corporate strategy.

The company has a pipeline of six clinical-stage and preclinical investigational therapeutics acquired and licensed from Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.

Serotiny, which focuses on high-throughput therapeutic multi-domain protein engineering for the next generation of cell and gene therapies, has hired Chad May as Chief Scientific Officer. In this new role, May will lead the research and development of Serotiny’s novel therapeutics programs.

He previously served as senior vice president of research and development at Maverick Therapeutics (acquired by Takeda in April 2021), where he helped develop two solid tumor targeting conditionally active T cell engagers, TAK-186 and TAK-280, through preclinical IND, enabling studies to first-in-human clinical trials. He has also worked as senior director of targeted immunotherapy for Pfizer, developing research strategy and overseeing execution of multiple immuno-oncology programs including T cell engagers, antibody drug conjugates, and monoclonal antibodies.

He also spent nine years at ImClone Systems (acquired by Eli Lilly in 2008) where he led several early stage monoclonal antibody and radioimmunotherapy programs.

Natera, a global leader in cell-free DNA testing, has named Dr. Minetta Liu Chief Medical Officer of oncology. In this role, she will set the direction for the company’s clinical and scientific roadmap in oncology.

Prior to Natera, Liu served as professor of oncology and chair of research in the Department of Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She also held a dual appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and served as co-leader of the Genomics in Action Strategic Priority for the Center of Individualized Medicine.

Illumina Ventures has promoted Dr. Malek Faham to Chief Scientist. He previously served as a venture partner and entrepreneur in residence. The venture firm has also hired Charles Lin as a Principal, and Dave Johnson as an Entrepreneur in Residence.

Lin previously served as vice president of business development and marketing at Element Biosciences.

Johnson most recently served as founder and CEO of GigaGen, a platform for single-cell immune genomics that was acquired by Grifols. He also served as COO at Natera, where he co-invented methods for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis.

Transcarent, a health and care experience company for employees of self-insured employers and their families, has hired Tim Rosa as Chief Marketing Officer. He previously served in the same role at Fitbit, where he helped launch the category of wearable fitness and health products, built the company’s marketing organization, and scaled the wearables and services business.

MDisrupt, a digital health intelligence company, announced today that Greg Nagy has been appointed as COO. In this newly created role, Nagy will lead the product and engineering teams as well as oversee the launch and expansion of MDisrupt’s platform to enable digital health innovators to access health experts and rapidly generate the real-world performance data needed to successfully commercialize and scale their products.

He previously served as Chief Marketing Officer at Drawbridge Health and Vice President of Global Marketing at Topcon Eyecare

He succeeds DocPanel Co-founder Philip Templeton, who was named Chief Innovation Officer after serving as CMO since the company’s inception in 2016.

Elation Health, a platform powering sustainable primary care, has hired Paul Bussi as chief revenue officer and Amanda Melander as head of marketing.

Bussi was previously the chief revenue officer for Rocket Lawyer. Melander previously served as head of global demand generation at athenahealth, where she led a variety of marketing functions.

Medtronic has hired Dr. Ashwini (Ash) Sharan as as Chief Medical Officer for its Neuromodulation Operating Unit. Sharan will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of our innovation and clinical evidence plans, help guide physician, society, and education engagements, serve as a medical advisor to the business, and interact with the medical community to identify current and future business opportunities to address unmet medical needs.

Sharan currently serves as co-director of the Neuro Restoration Center and Professor of Neurological Surgery and Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College.

Color Health has added Ann Mather and Luis Borgen to their board of directors.

Borgen will serve on Color’s board as the Audit Chair and Mather is joining as an independent board member.

Mather is currently Chair of the Audit Committees for Alphabet and Netflix. Borgen most recently served as the CFO of athenahealth. He has also served as CFO at healthcare services provider DaVita, Inc.
