As part of his company’s efforts to develop a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, Memory Health CEO Edward Shehab is convinced that prevention is the best approach. Shehab talked about the company’s strategy for developing treatments for neurodegenerative conditions and the company’s outlook, in response to emailed questions.
Why did you start this company?
I watched a lifetime of shared memories evaporate in front of me. That was the painful realization I had following a pleasant conversation with my mother one day in 2018. She was in the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease and as we had lunch, I realized she didn’t recognize me. She was treating me like a stranger.
Her diagnosis led me to research the progressive degenerative brain disorder, which results in cognitive problems and changes in personality and behavior, in an attempt to protect others from living the same heart-breaking scenario I had experienced.
Once the disease becomes symptomatic, it is considered incurable and irreversible. Prevention is the key to fighting it. It’s never too early to take care of your brain, but it can be too late before you know it.
During my journey in researching Alzheimer’s and the ways to minimize and slow the disease, I learned about Memory Health, an all-natural, premium nootropic and cognitive enhancer. Is this your first healthcare startup? What’s your background in healthcare?
This is my first healthcare startup, which came about as a result of the experience with my mother and her Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. Originally, I worked in the banking industry, where I was an executive officer and treasurer of a local bank. Eventually though, I wanted to expand my horizons entrepreneurially. So, after the sale of the bank, I took a risk and became the co-founder of Titan Global Oil Services of Birmingham, a global supplier of oil and well service personnel. So, I have a lot of leadership and entrepreneurial experience.
When my mother became sick, I needed to do something. I had a new purpose with which to direct my entrepreneurial spirit. Once I discovered Memory Health, I knew I had to get it into as many people’s hands as possible. Even though I’m successful in my other endeavors, I spend my personal time and resources as Memory Health’s managing partner and doing everything I can to prevent other families having to go through what my family did.
What is your company’s business model?
Memory Health operates as an ecommerce company, selling from business to
consumer. The supplement sells on the Memory Health website and on Amazon, with a subscription option available.
Who is your customer?
Memory Health is a product for everyone at every age and every level of health who is looking to properly provide their brain with the proper nutrition. The problem is that even with a healthy diet, we can’t get the amount of nutrients necessary to support proper brain health. According to USDA data, just one bowl of spinach in 1953 had the same nutritional value as more than 43 bowls of spinach today and each of us need supplementation to fill that gap.
Memory Health is especially helpful to those looking to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, due to it running in the family. It is also an impactful option for CTE sufferers, for pregnant and menopausal women, and anyone suffering from brain fog due to chemotherapy, illness or aging.
How do you generate revenue?
Memory Health generates revenue through the sale of the Memory Health supplement on our website, on Amazon and through select health shops and doctors’ offices. We like to say that Memory Health sells Memory Health, because the majority of our sales are made through recommendations by a family member, a friend or a doctor. Once people feel the brain boost that Memory Health provides, they’re eager to share the good news.
Do you have clinical validation for your product?
Four clinical trials have validated the fact that Memory Health improves the brain health of both healthy and diseased brains of all ages. The results of one of these studies were published in the scientific Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, which referred to Memory Health as a “glimmer of hope” in the fight against the disease.
