Navina’s Data Platform Slashes Administrative Burden Associated with VBC, Physicians Say

Millennium Physician Group — an independent care group with more than 800 providers across Florida, Texas, and North Carolina — announced successful results following its adoption of Navina’s AI platform. The organization said that the platform saved time, reduced burnout and gave physicians more confidence about forming care plans with patients.

Physicians participating in value-based care are responsible for maintaining patients’ overall health status and risk, increasing preventive care and improving outcomes for patients with chronic conditions. But the technology they use often predates the movement to value-based care.

“In order for physicians to document the risks and preventives and be sure they’re not sending a patient for a redundant test or procedure, they have to wade through a multitude of different screens and functions within their existing technology, the EHR. This takes up a huge amount of time both before and after the patient’s visit,” said Shay Perera, Navina’s co-founder and chief technology officer.

Founded in 2018, Navina seeks to solve this problem through its AI platform, which gathers and analyzes patient data from disparate sources to enable better value-based care. Millennium Physician Group —  an independent care group with more than 800 providers across Florida, Texas, and North Carolina — on Tuesday announced successful results following its adoption of Navina’s AI platform. The organization said that the platform saved physicians time, reduced burnout and improved care quality.

Millennium is an accountable care organization. It was among the top ten accountable care organizations with the highest generated savings in the country in 2021. The organization implemented Navina’s technology to strengthen its value-based strategy, as the platform provides automated risk adjustment workflows and diagnosis insights at the point of care.

Navina’s platform helps physician practices with three key problems — data overload, burnout and costs — Perera said.

Primary care physicians are flooded with and overwhelmed by exponentially growing amounts of data flowing in from new technologies. The information they have to wade through is disorganized and non-chronological, and recent data often can’t be integrated quickly from different sources. This leads to physician burnout, missed diagnoses and redundant procedures.

“These dots are not connected, so clinical misses are inevitable,” Perera said.

For practices participating in value-based care models, these missed clinical opportunities result in lost revenue and higher cost of care.

Navina’s platform addresses these problems by providing physicians with complete patient histories that collect information from all data sources. The information in these patient histories are organized for physicians to quickly and intuitively read and process. Physicians also receive suggestions for undiagnosed conditions and preventive care opportunities.

“Ultimately, Navina makes it possible for physicians to complete their chart review in a minute, rather than sifting through unintuitive and incomplete records,” Perera declared. “The result is that clinicians have better visibility into the complexity of their patients’ health status and are able to make more specific assessments about their care.”

Millennium deployed Navina’s platform to more than 650 physicians and Medicare risk adjustment coders. The onboarding period took 24 hours.

The organization’s physicians said that the platform made them feel more confident about forming care plans with patients, Perera shared. Millennium’s staff also said that the technology saved time and decreased burnout and by reducing the administrative burden typically associated with value-based care.

In addition to the time savings, physicians also found Navina’s technology easy to use — the platform saw a 94% engagement rate among Millennium staff. This ease-of-use helps Navina stand out from competitors like Innovaccer and Curation Health, Perera said.

“The success of value-based care is dependent on physician adoption,” he declared. “A 94% user engagement rate means that the practice will fully realize the advantages of payment reform. Navina has earned an ongoing usage rate of north of 90%  — a testament to the fact that we have built a platform which clinicians love.”

Physicians not only find Navina’s platform simple to use, they also consider it trustworthy, Perera said. This is evidenced by the fact that Millennium physicians addressed 93% of the diagnostic suggestions made by the technology.

In total, about 4,000 clinicians and support staff use Navina’s platform. The company, based in Israel and New York, has raised $44 million to date.
