ViVE themes and panel highlights

The agenda will embrace 11 themes in healthcare, highlighted on the event’s website.

Care model behavior

Healthcare industry partners have to navigate a multifaceted structure, working together to figure out how best to deploy technology that improves the patient experience while respecting provider workflows, accelerate care delivery and lower costs. Novel care models have the potential to deliver integrated patient care across the continuum that results in positive quality outcomes and an outstanding experience for all involved.

Example:

Head to Toe Health

Behavioral health is finally getting a seat at the table. Standard physical care settings are adopting behavioral health screenings and treatment as the new norm. This noticeable shift is moving the industry towards a more holistic, whole health approach that aims to address the challenges posed by the current fragmented care delivery system. The US Preventative Health Taskforce is asking all physicians to screen patients for anxiety and depression during routine visits, but in reality most docs are not trained to do so. In an already strained environment for physicians, they are likely hesitant to add an additional step onto their already demanding priority list. Through care model ingenuity, health leaders have made behavioral health foundational to all care without adding more stress to our clinicians. Let’s create a future where healthcare is not merely a reaction to illness, but a proactive and integrated approach that nurtures both physical and behavioral well-being, ultimately fostering a healthier and more resilient society.

Is it really all about the patient?

Although payers demand high quality outcomes and value for the care they support, patients want access to care at a price they can afford. As telemedicine, wearables, and AI enhance patient engagement, how are healthcare organizations Keeping consumerism and care navigations front of mind? How can we improve every touchpoint in the patient journey?

Example:

The Sun Never Sets on the Health Consumer

Thanks to cutting-edge technology, wearable devices, and the boom of real-world data, we now possess the capability to tailor consumer experiences in healthcare to each and every individual. Similar to how social media seems to know exactly the content you want at the exact time you want it, healthcare can follow a similar path where gentle nudges, recommendations and interventions are served up at a time when a patient is in need. This approach unburdens patients from navigating the complicated care delivery landscape alone and digitally directs them to the right place, empowering them to take it from there. Easier said than done, especially in an industry that doesn’t necessarily scream consumer-centricity, but we are making progress. Health leaders are rolling up their sleeves, exploring different care models, incorporating more holistic elements like food and nutrition, getting to know their patients’ individual needs and providing a truly transformative consumer health experience. Patient expectations are a moving target, so put on your track shoes and move with them!

Invaluable data is the resource that holds the power to transform healthcare delivery, research, and decision-making, ushering in an era of personalized medicine, improved patient outcomes, and data-driven innovations. Yet, as the digital ecosystem expands, the ethical, privacy, and security challenges surrounding healthcare data loom large, underscoring the need for responsible stewardship and robust governance to harness its potential for the betterment of society. Dive into the promises and perils of data aggregation and analysis in healthcare.

Example

Data that’s Getting Personal

Approximately 30% of the world’s data volume is generated by the healthcare industry with much of that being churned out by the patient themself. Patient-generated data has emerged as a transformative predictor of health outcomes, but the intricacies of harnessing, utilizing, and ensuring the HIPAA compliance of this ever-expanding resource are becoming more entangled. Health orgs are setting their sights on creating a centralized data strategy capable of efficiently housing and disseminating this wealth of information stemming from wearables and mobile apps to patient-reported outcomes. The deep, diverse data coming from patient-generated sources offers the most a holistic view of our individual health journeys. If we are able to seamlessly integrate and analyze this information to empower clinicians, researchers, and healthcare providers in delivering more targeted and effective care, we can usher in a new era of precision healthcare. Oversharing is encouraged!

Health systems staying above water

Healthcare providers face rising expenses and flat, even decreasing, reimbursement rates. This creates a major challenge for hospitals and health systems as they try to provide the care their communities need. Hundreds of rural hospitals are in peril due to their precarious financial status. More than 200 rural hospitals are at immediate risk of closure, and nearly 30% of rural hospitals nationwide are at risk of closing in the near future. Providers must work to not only reduce the cost of providing care but also adopt ways to increase revenue. Although reducing staff and services can cut costs, these tactics seem at odds with improving revenue and building patient loyalty. How can providers employ solutions that will keep our health systems intact for the future?

Example:

Value-Based Care Going for the Leading Role

As more and more health organizations ditch the traditional fee-for-service model and jump onto the Value Based Care bandwagon, proponents who back this approach are multiplying. VBC isn’t just a win for patients– it presents economic advantages. While VBC payments align with total spend and outcomes, systems are wary due to its near-term predictability. The concern being that a VBC model wouldn’t generate as much revenue as its traditional counterpart. However, this is simply not true. By strategically reducing utilization and spending in pharmacy and post-acute care costs through reduced readmissions, healthcare systems can achieve high profit margins. This multifaceted approach puts a focus on preventative health, reduces operational costs, enhances overall care coordination among providers, and strengthens patient loyalty, elevating the reputation of the business. If this hasn’t convinced you, listen to the experts make the business case for VBC!

Healthcare disrupted

The use of technology has already helped drive this healthcare revolution, but what can we expect in the next 1-5 years? How will AI, wearables, robotics, and virtual care change the way we deliver patient care? What is on the horizon that we have not even imagined? Disruption can create a shift in mental models, creating opportunities for improvement in caring for our communities.

Example:

Value-based Care has a Way with Specialty Care

The evolution of value-based care in the specialty care space has been dominated by the emergence of episode-based payment models. Although some of these episode-based models have demonstrated cost savings, their standalone and payer-specific nature poses challenges for cohesive health system planning. They often lead to ineffective referral management, a lack of coordination, and dysfunction among members of the care teams. To achieve real accountable care for patients, strategies to align incentives across both primary and specialty care in a payer-agnostic manner and achieve true care coordination is a necessity. Specialty care providers now have the opportunity to manage the total cost of care for their patients leading to more affordability and improved care quality, especially for patients with comorbidities. Despite the proven outcomes, standing up these models aren’t without hurdles, fee-for-service is a hard habit to break. Further, technological barriers, bureaucratic mazes, and data interoperability issues pose significant challenges. These specialty care leaders are feeling risky, so bring on the challenge!

Lights, camera, AI in action

The emergence of LLMs like ChatGPT and Med-PaLM have blown the doors open for more use cases of this technology in a healthcare setting. There are still many question marks surrounding ethical considerations for applying this technology at scale. Nonetheless, organizations continue to pilot this technology. AI is certainly not a perfect fix, but it can begin to help solve some of healthcare’s biggest challenges in the near future. This track will spotlight the many ways AI can enhance the patient care journey from admission to the point of discharge.

Example:

Awakenings: The Perils of AI Success

Embark on a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges inherent in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare landscape. The ethical considerations, potential biases, and challenges associated with AI in medical decision-making emphasize the importance of responsible implementation to ensure patient safety and privacy. AI has promising implications in healthcare, yet there are several considerations to responsibly implementing AI into existing workflows. For example, the training and education of medical professionals to deal with AI tools, as well as the careful evaluation of which AI solution fits best for each provider. Striking the delicate balance between technological innovation and maintaining the highest standards of patient care is not easy. The landscape of AI in healthcare is nuanced and we have to continually harness its potential while mitigating potential harms. Provider leaders will argue that AI-driven technologies can enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and personalized care without introducing unintended bias and poor outcomes.
