As more hospitals and medical practices assess AI applications to improve medical bill collection and revenue cycle management more broadly, it’s a good opportunity to discuss what healthcare organizations see as the ROI for revenue cycle management. That was one of the topics of a webinar sponsored by Smarter Technologies. The conversation with Smarter Technologies CEO Michael Gao, MD and Lakeland Regional Health Director of Clinical Documentation Integrity Rebecca Burlin highlighted a recent report on RCM, best practices for RCM tech vendors and the tech needs shaping clinical and administrative operations. MedCity News Editor-in-Chief Arundhati Parmar served as the moderator.
Gao noted that the company’s offering combines an understanding of not only a healthcare organization’s revenue cycle, but also clinical documentation integrity, EHR integration, and billing systems. He emphasized the importance of tech that supports clinicians and avoids complicating their workflows.
“Where there’s real opportunity is having AI that delivers measurable ROI that’s integrated tightly within your workflow that has that critical human supervision, especially where it veers into areas that are more clinical in nature,” Gao explained.
Burlin highlighted some of the ways Lakeland has benefited from its relationship with Smarter Technologies, such as recommendations that they provide, insights and clinical knowledge.
“It’s not easy to win over a physician who has been doing their job for a long time, especially when you talk technology or AI,” Burlin said. “So to get our providers on board with that, it just it really blew us away as to what we could accomplish together. We’ve been able to see that not only in financial impact, but also in quality measures, in satisfaction with the team.”
Among the takeaways from the webinar:
- Addressing revenue cycle pain points
- Inpatient utilization management challenges with prior authorization
- The hidden tax providers pay to recover revenue
- Using AI to improve claims accuracy, help teams review documentation and manage payer communication
- Reducing the risk of hallucinations
