Several March M&A deals caught the attention of Debunked Podcast co-hosts, including Abbot’s $23 billion acquisition of Exact Sciences, makers of Cologuard, Universal Health Services’ $835 million purchase of virtual mental health business Talkspace, and California-based Sutter Health’s deal to buy Allina Health, located in Minnesota.
MedCity News Editor-in-Chief Arundhati Parmar and Samir Batra, managing partner of Health Innovation Pitch, discussed the strategy behind Sutter’s Allina acquisition at length, including what each party gets out of it.
“It’s not a marriage of equals,” Arundhati observed. Samir provided a breakdown on the cross-border deal.
“Allina can’t compete with Mayo Clinic or Fairview on tech innovation. Allina has a different talent skillset around medtech and engineering. Sutter has been doubling down on its health tech and AI strategy. Sutter is getting buying power, from a negotiation perspective, with insurers.”
Arundhati and Samir also had a fascinating conversation about Mindgard’s assessment of a prescription refill bot created by Doctronic and piloted by the state of Utah. Check out the full podcast above.
