A Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist has been named the new president of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, a regional health system serving 29 counties in eastern North Carolina.

Dr. David Herman is currently medical director of the Mayo Clinic Affiliated Practice Network. He is a consultant in ophthalmology at Mayo and a professor of ophthalmology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

As president of Greenville, North Carolina-based UHS, Herman will be responsible for overseeing a health system that is moving toward a more integrated system of healthcare delivery. He said in a statement that his decision to relocate to eastern North Carolina was based on the potential to unify a system of care that will be critical in the coming years.

Dave McRae, CEO of UHS, said Herman will start his new position this summer. Herman currently serves on the boards of directors for the Mayo Health System and the Western Region of the Mayo Health System, and is a member of the management team of Mayo Clinic. Herman also served as chair of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Clinical Practice Committee, an executive position similar to his new position at UHS.

“Dr. Herman has experience in building a mature, integrated healthcare delivery system,” McRae said in a prepared statement. “His leadership at one of the world’s premier healthcare systems will guide us as we prepare for this new world of healthcare for eastern North Carolina.”

Herman is a native of International Falls, Minnesota. He received his bachelor’s degree in physiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his medical degree from Mayo Medical School. Herman also has a master’s degree in medical management from the University of Texas-Dallas.

UHS is made up of eight hospitals as well as physician practices, home health, hospice, wellness centers and other healthcare services. Facilities where it has an ownership or management stake include Albemarle Health, Bertie Memorial Hospital, Chowan Hospital, Duplin General Hospital, Heritage Hospital, Outer Banks Hospital, Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, University Home Health and Hospice and ViQuest Center. It is also affiliated with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
