MediSafe partners with Human API to help users see connections between medication and their medical data

Users will be able to import their medication lists from thousands of hospitals and medical facilities through Human API's platform.

In a move that combines the consumerization of healthcare and Internet of Things trends, medication management technology business MediSafe has partnered with Human API to make it easier for users to view their medication data in the context of their data from digital devices as well as labs, clinics and apps.

Users will be able to import their medication lists from thousands of hospitals and medical facilities through Human API’s platform, according to a MediSafe statement. It’s the latest in a series of services the Israeli company has added to improve patient engagement and make its medication adherence tool more appealing to a broader variety of customers. In April, for example, it made it possible for users to view their medication adherence data in context with blood pressure readings and blood glucose levels.

The hope is that patients will be able to see in more concrete terms the connection between taking their medication and improvements, or declines, in their health. It’s the kind of information that could improve the quality of their interactions with doctors and other healthcare professionals.

In a phone interview with MediSafe CEO Omri Shor, he said: “We don’t see many hospitals offering actionable information on patient portals. Everyone is talking about that trend, but this is [a reflection] of the trend.”

The deal has been coming together for awhile, according to CEOs for both companies. Shor said he and Human API CEO Andrei Pop had been interested in integrating their platforms since MediSafe closed its Series A round. Although the collaboration is designed to provide an additional service for MediSafe’s 2 million users, Shor views it as especially useful for people on multiple medications and/or who have chronic conditions.

Pop said the deal was a step toward boosting patient empowerment by giving them greater access to their own data.He added that the deal also is closer to the next generation of healthcare tools that will be more consumer-centric. It puts patients in the position not only of gaining access to more of their healthcare data but also making it easier to share with whichever organizations they choose.

Human API has been fairly tight-lipped about new developments with its digital health business, especially after it raised a fresh round of capital earlier this year. Pop did say that it has customers in 40 countries and that more than 8,000 developers are deploying Human API and it’s scaling up very quickly. He said the company expects to make a lot more announcements in the fourth quarter.
