IBM made a major splash in the world of healthcare Big Data this week, agreeing to buy Truven Health Analytics for a whopping $2.6 billion.
This deal gives IBM Watson Health access to 4 petabytes of healthcare claims and administrative data, as well as Truven’s roster of hundreds of scientists. It may well alter the competitive landscape in healthcare analytics that also includes Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong’s NantHealth and the data arms of large payers, such as UnitedHealth’s Optum.
