Mayo Clinic names 17 members to social media advisory board

Mayo Clinic's Center for Social Media named 17 members Wednesday to its advisory board, which will help draft industry guidelines and best practices for using social media to improve health care. Mayo launched the social media center last summer with the goal of helping the health care community improve care through the use of social media tools like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Mayo Clinic doctor’s talk at TED fuels her breast imaging efforts

Dr. Deborah Rhodes spoke in early December at TEDWomen, one of a series of events that highlights innovative thinkers and "ideas worth spreading." Since the speech was posted online late last week, it has become one of TEDWomen's "most emailed" and has caused a deluge of interview requests, said a Mayo spokesperson. In her talk, Rhodes zeroed in on the center of recent controversy and confusion over mammogram guidelines: breast density.

Mayo Clinic partners with Intel to study football player hits

One of the biggest storyies in the National Football League this season revolves around concussions resulting from horrific hits on the field. Last week, chip maker Intel Corp. said it's researching the topic, partnering with universities and a major helmet manufacturer to develop computer simulations that can assess the risk of head injuries. Key to Intel's efforts is a collaboration with Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic to license vaccine technology to Seattle startup

Mayo Clinic is partnering with a Seattle-based biotech startup to develop vaccines against breast cancer and smallpox, the company said. TapImmune Inc. (OTCBB:TPIV) said it reached a deal to license Mayo technology that will help the company develop a vaccine that it says can prompt the body's immune system to mount an aggressive attack on the diseases.

Mayo Clinic clinical trials system gets a boost

Mayo's Clinical Trials Management System positions the health system to increase its presence in both industry-sponsored trials as well as trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, Mayo officials said. Organizations like NCI are pushing broader use of Clinical Trials Management Systems so researchers can share more data with fewer errors and in a more organized way.

Mayo Clinic said Tuesday that it's taking its social media push overseas. The non-profit research and hospital group, based in Rochester, Minnesota, launched the Social Media Health Network, an international group that promotes the use of social media tools like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to promote health, fight disease and improve healthcare around the world.
