Quintiles has a new chief medical and scientific officer.
The Durham, North Carolina-based clinical research organization named Dr. Jeffrey Spaeder to the position on Wednesday. He succeeds Dr. Oren Cohen, who had served as the company’s chief medical officer since 2004. Cohen now leads Quintiles phase 1 clinical research business.
Spaeder comes to Quintiles from Takeda Pharmaceuticals International (TYO:4502) where he was executive director of global medical affairs. At Takeda, Spaeder developed strategy for the company’s cardio-metabolic and diabetes drugs. Before Takeda, Spaeder held various roles at Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT), including director of alliance management where he managed oncology research collaboration with a biotechnology partner.
At Quintiles, Spaeder will serve as its lead medical expert representing the company’s position on a wide variety of governance, ethical and scientific issues. He will chair Quintiles’s Drug Safety Committee and serve as vice chair of Quintiles’s Council on Research Ethics. He will also provide guidance on strategic scientific initiatives.
“He will be the public face and voice of Quintiles, acting as an industry thought leader and a champion of ethical conduct and behavior,” Dr. Derek Winstanly, Quintiles’s chief customer and governance officer said in a prepared statement.
Spaeder is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also has an MBA from Northwestern University with a concentration in finance. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a diplomate in cardiovascular disease with the American Board of Internal Medicine.
