Expanding the power of Ohio’s broadband research network tenfold will enhance patient care, education and innovation for the state’s medical industry and institutions, according to Gov. John Kasich and several Ohio medical researchers.

“This will take us to a new level in terms of being able to take care of our patients routinely and remotely,” said Dr. Ali Rezai of Ohio State University College of Medicine’s department of neurological surgery.

The network, known by its acronym OARnet, will be upgraded to send data at 100 gigabytes per second, up from a current 10.  That could allow, for example, medical images such as MRIs to load in seconds rather than minutes.

Large files and data that now can be cumbersome and time consuming to transmit and share can move quickly and efficiently between physicians and researchers with OARnet’s 100 Gbs broadband connection,” said Dr. Samer Narouze, chairman of the Center for Pain Medicine at Summa Western Reserve Hospital.

The network’s upgrade is expected to begin within a few months, Kasich said. The state will invest about $8 million in equipment to enhance speed on the network.

Ohio has more fiber optical broadband installed per capita than any other state in the nation, according to the Kasich administration.
