A Canadian health IT company has developed a collaborative, Web-based platform to provide cancer treatment guidelines to clinicians. The idea is that by linking the most up-to-date cancer treatment options appropriate to individual patients to electronic medical records, it could improve quality of care and reduce healthcare costs.

Evinance, a Montreal-based software company, developed its platform working with the Philadelphia-based National Comprehensive Cancer Network over a five-year period.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network was formed in 1995 and consists of 21 cancer centers that develop guidelines to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of an oncology practice. It licenses content to health IT companies ranging from McKesson to Express Scripts.

“When a clinician treats a patient and opens their file in the electronic health record system, we can verify the patient against the provider set of guidelines and return back information specific to that patient.”

The company was one of 12 pitching at the fourth annual Canadian eHealth Innovation Summit at the University City Science Center in Philadelphia this week. The Canadian Consulate is selecting up to six of these companies to join a health IT accelerator it is launching at the Science Center next year.

In addition to cancer, it also sees opportunities to expand its platform to other areas like diabetes and cardiology. Chad Armstrong, the CEO of Evinance, talked about the kind of strategic partners the company is looking for in the US.
