The Affordable Care is the law of the land.

And it is estimated that the new healthcare exchanges that are part of the law will cover 13.9 million new patients in 2014, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.

The above fact, taken in the context of a continuing nursing shortage, and an increasingly aging population that will consume even more healthcare, means that hospitals and providers have to find new ways of managing their most precious resource – workers.

Managing workforce cost is key to keeping overall hospital expenses down and one way to do that is analyze staffing costs, according to Hospitals and Health Networks. That trade publication recommends that “by automating the workforce planning process, organizations can identify anomalies in staffing patterns and make better-informed staffing decisions.”

In other words hospital systems should leverage technology to get real-time information on staffing needs to ensure that care is being delivered appropriately and efficiently. There are several companies that offer such automated solutions including API Healthcare.

According to the company’s website, it helped Bloomington Hospital in Indiana automate its manual staffing process to create a more efficient scheduling system that provide greater information.

“Healthcare-specific workforce management solutions, such as those offered by API Healthcare, help track the organizational aspects of patient care, such as staffing and scheduling, patient acuity, and real-time analytics,” said Karlene Kerfoot, API Healthcare’s vice president of nursing, in a recent company news release.
