Although apps were the focus at Datapalooza IV, there were a few medical devices in the mix as well, ranging from futuristic to fluffy.

A unique team that includes a movie director, entrepreneur, and environmental engineer won the My Air My Health Challenge hosted by HHS. Gabrielle Savage Dockterman, Angel Devil Productions, Dot Kelly, Shearwater Design, David Kuller, AUX won $100,000 for their mashup of sensors that tracks airborne pollutants, heart rate, breathing rate, and physical activity. The idea is to incorporate the device into workout clothing for athletes. The green light shows breathing in and out, the blue light shows air quality and the red lights indicate heart reverberation.
Kuller showed off the device at the event and said that it is built with off-the-shelf components.
“We were set to shoot the video the day after the bombing in Boston, but obviously you can’t wear this in the city, so we went out to the country,” Kuller said.

The fluffy device was Jerry the bear. Aaron Horowitz of Sproutel designed the stuffed animal for kids with type 1 diabetes. He needs insulin injections which kids can administer in his paws. His backpack holds food cards that show the carb count for things like a juice box or an apple. Horowitz said that the company raised a round of funding last year and is raising another now.
“Our first production run ships in July and we have pre-sold 75% of it already,” he said.

Kinsa presented on the main stage and showed off their smart thermometer. They are raising money on Indiegogo and are only about $11,000 short of their $50,000 goal.

We have created a thermometer that gives you so much more than just a temperature reading. By leveraging the power, display, processing, and connectivity of your phone, the Kinsa Smart Thermometer not only tells you your temperature, but can also tell you what illnesses are going around, what you might have, and what you can do about it.

I was sitting next to a doctor who was shocked that Kinsa was not using a infrared thermometer. Because a standard thermometer can be off by up to two degrees, she thought that it really limited the power of the device.
