Early reports on the Obamacare exchanges: Busy and glitchy

There is nothing official yet, but a few early comments on the health insurance exchanges show both good and bad news: lots of people are trying to sign up, but the system — at least the federal one – is not working well (as many predicted).

UPDATE: The Hill reports that Healthcare.Gov has logged 1 million visits today. Sam Baker also writes that California and Connecticut had reported successful enrollments by noon, but other states had taken parts of their systems offline, including Maryland.

Of course, the number that really matters is how many people successfully signed up for a policy.

One health industry professional reported on his experience with trying – and failing – to apply for insurance on the federal exchange:

I was up and ready to try the new healthcare exchanges at HealthCare.gov this morning. While it started well with a nice GUI (graphic user interface), it went downhill from there.

Once I got in, it was busy so I had to hold.

Then, when I tried to create a username and followed the directions, it wouldn’t accept my username.

And, finally, when I got through it all, it wouldn’t accept who I was to let me proceed.
…this won’t reflect badly on the plans because I can’t even get far enough into the process to see what plans participate.
