What is Meaningful Use in the first place? It is the set of standards which have been defined by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, commonly known as CMS for the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). These standards allow eligible providers and hospitals to earn incentives by meeting certain criteria. The primary aim of Meaningful Use is to encourage the widespread use of EHRs.

Meaningful Use delivers results, and the features of meaningful use of EHRs are:

Completeness. When working with EHRs, the data/information needed for the health care providers is complete, ensuring that the most appropriate care is provided to the patient. Meaningful Use stage 1 lays the framework for focusing on collecting electronic health information data of patients in a standardized form. Being Meaningful Certified, providers can accurately retrieve data of the patient in a standard form. And when your health care EHR vendor is Meaningful Stage 2 certified, they can allow more rigorous Health Information Exchange (HIE).

Easy access to information. Meaningful Use certified EHRs allows better and efficient transmission of patient data, which in turn allows health information exchange in real-time among different health care providers resulting in the accurate diagnoses of the patient at the point-of-care. The coordination of the information is made possible between multiple platforms using EHRs.

Meaningful use of EHR empowers the patient. Meaningful Stage 1 & 2 criteria require the use of patients’ information to engage them and their families efficiently. The meaningful use of Electronic health records’ will help patients take control of their lives and change the environment around them. Patients can obtain electronic copies of their medical records and share their health date securely over the Internet with their families.

Meaningful Use is not there to produce dead accurate results but it exists to ensure that the process to reach precise results for your health care practice is in line with the standard system because when the system is in line the rest follows.
