Now that you’ve scooped up all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, it’s time to open your wallet for a good cause. Everyone from the 92nd Street Y in New York City to Bill and Melinda Gates in Seattle is supporting this new cause: #GivingTuesday.

The point is not to give to a specific nonprofit, but to simply give time or money. The White House blog described it this way:

#GivingTuesday builds on the American tradition of giving back but uses technology to give this greater impact. #GivingTuesday is intended to encourage Americans to reflect and give back. It’s a collective moment for individual and community action.

Google+ and Mashable are having a hangout to promote the event. You can join it now.

The Hangout-a-thon is a phoneathon for the connected generation of the 21st century. It will feature 12 hours of thought-provoking guests, who will share updates on some of the most disruptive nonprofits working today. The best part is, if you like what you hear, you can take action right on the spot by donating to the project through the Google+ Hangout.

The event has grown significantly since its start last year. The first GivingTuesday attracted about 2,500 charities; this year 7,000 nonprofits are participating.

You can find a full list of the official healthcare partners here. Here are my suggestions for which organizations deserve your donation today.

Able People Foundation – The Foundation provides basic mobility equipment, at no charge, to eligible candidates, as well as advocacy education to promote independence. Donate.

Akron Children’s Hospital is participating in the 2nd annual celebration of #GivingTuesday with an online campaign to benefit the Courage for Carina Gift Card fund. The Courage for Carina Gift Card fund provides families receiving care from the Haslinger Family Center for Pediatric Palliative Care at Akron Children’s Hospital with gift cards for everyday expenses such as gasoline, groceries and other items. Donate.

America Association for Cancer Research – The AACR Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Cancer seeks to provide researchers with the necessary funds to continue their vital work and support the AACR’s high-quality, high-impact programs for researchers, patients and advocates. Donate.

Golden Hat Foundation – Long-term goals include the establishment of innovative assisted living campuses designed to truly honor all individuals on the autism spectrum by creating an environment that supports and respects their individual needs and strengths. Donate.

Hope Scarves – Hope Scarves was created to capture the stories of courageous women and encourage others by passing along scarves and stories of hope. The organization hopes that when each woman wraps a Hope Scarf around her head she feels the strength and determination of the women who wore it before her. Donate.

NeedyMeds – NeedyMeds’ mission is to be the best source of accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date information on programs that help people facing problems paying for medications and health care, to assist those in need in applying to programs and to provide health-related education using innovative methods. Donate.

US Against Alzheimers – US Against Alzheimer’s is a community of individuals dedicated to mobilizing individuals to demand the urgency, passion and commitment needed by our political, business and civic leaders to achieve the goal of ending Alzheimer’s by 2020. Donate.

Once you have selected a charity to support, pick one of these four ways to participate from this list on Good.is.

1. Share an unselfie
Selfie was named the word of the year but we want to make “unselfie” the word of the season. An unselfie is a show of support for #GivingTuesday. Just take a selfie with a caption (or have it on a card in the picture) explaining how or why you and/or your friends are giving this year. Use the hashtags #unselfie and #GivingTuesday and post it to Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter to share it.

2. Take the #GivingTuesday Pledge
Make a pledge on #GivingTuesday to give a little more — pledge to donate five to 10 percent more annually to your favorite nonprofit or pledge to volunteer more over the next year and share it out over your social networks.

3. Reach out to your favorite nonprofit
#GivingTuesday has more than 6,500 partners (and growing!) in all 50 U.S. states. Reach out to your favorite nonprofit to see how you can help support them this #GivingTuesday.

4. Be a Social Media Ambassador
Help spread the word about #GivingTuesday with your family, friends and colleagues across your social network. Learn from like-minded peers, gain access to exclusive content, submit your own ideas and share those exciting messages with your networks.
